Food for Work
A “Food-for-Work” project is enabling families in Niger to stay in their community, rather than leave to find food and work, in the midst of a food crisis affecting countries across West Africa. The program, which involves people working on projects that benefit their community, in exchange for food, is feeding some 25,000 people in three regions. World Vision implements the program, in partnership with the UN’s World Food Programme as the food provider. The aim of the project is to give food to the people that they need to survive in the short term, while they build a reliable source of water that will benefit the whole
community in the long term. The project is funded by donation with help of volunteering and UN support. Despite the food crisis, with this help World Vision, Nigerien families are able to stay in their communities, rather than have to leave for the city to find work or move their livestock for grazing.
